Reader menus, themes and page settings

What’s in each reader’s menu, and every option in Themes & Settings for ebooks, PDFs and comics.

The reader menu

Tap the middle of the page to open the menu. It has the same shape in every reader:

• At the top, a Contents pill with how far you are. Tap it to open the contents. In paged mode, drag it to scrub through the book.
• In the middle, a list of rows.
• At the bottom, a row of round buttons.

Read & Listen and Listen to Audiobook only appear when your library has the audiobook of the same book. Read & Listen is greyed out, with the reason, when the audiobook isn’t downloaded or another audiobook is playing.

Select text in an ebook for Highlight, Add Note, Remove (takes a highlight away), Read Aloud and Look Up.

Ebook: Themes & Settings

Every change restyles the open book straight away.

Text size. The two A buttons step the size up and down.

Font. Pick one of the built-in fonts: Book default (the book’s own), Literata, Serif, Sans-serif, Monospace, Georgia or Palatino. Fonts you’ve added to your server are listed under From your server. Add Font… takes a .ttf, .otf, .woff or .woff2 file from the Files app. See Reading ebooks.

Theme. Four built-in themes: Paper, Sepia, Dim and Black.

• Tap New to make your own, up to four. Choose the page and text colours. The editor rates how easy the text is to read (Strong, Soft or Too faint) and shows a preview.
• Touch and hold a theme to Edit, Duplicate or Delete it.
• Turn on Match System to pick one theme for light mode and one for dark mode. The reader then switches between them with your device.

Brightness. A slider for the screen brightness while you read.

Text & Spacing.

• Line Spacing, from 1.0 to 2.0.
• Paragraph Spacing: Default, None, Tight, Normal, Relaxed or Loose. Saved for each book.
• First-Line Indent: Default, None, Small or Medium.
• Justify and Hyphenate.
• Side Margins: Narrow, Normal or Wide.
• Page Direction: Automatic, Left to Right or Right to Left. Saved for each book.

Page Display.

• Layout: Paged turns one page at a time. Scrolled scrolls through each chapter and on into the next.
• Show on the page: Book Title, Chapter Title, Page Numbers (the page, and pages left in the chapter), Clock and Sync Indicator. Turn off any you don’t want.

Page Turns (paged only).

• Tap to Turn: tap the sides of the page to turn. Off means swipe to turn, and any tap shows the menu.
• Animate Page Turns.
• Left side: Turns Back, or Top Forward, Bottom Back.
• Side width: how much of each side counts as a tap to turn.
• Bottom edge: Tap to Turn Forward makes a tap along the bottom turn the page, so you can read with one hand.
• Show Tap Areas on the Book draws the tap areas over the page.

PDF: Page Settings

Open Themes & Settings in a PDF.

• Layout: Paged or Continuous.
• Crop Margins trims the blank border around each page. It’s also a button in the menu.
• Page colour: Original, Sepia, Gray or Invert.
• Brightness.
• Page Display: Book Title, Page Numbers, Clock and Sync Indicator.
• Page Turns, as for ebooks (paged only).

Comic: Page Settings

Open Themes & Settings in a comic.

• Layout: Auto, Paged or Scrolled. Scrolled is webtoon mode, one long strip. Auto opens tall-strip comics scrolled and everything else paged.
• Page Direction: Left to Right or Right to Left. It follows the book unless you pick one.
• Page colour: Original, Sepia, Gray or Invert.
• Brightness.
• Page Display and Page Turns (Page Turns is hidden in Scrolled).

Page Options, in the comic menu:

• Fit: tap to cycle through Fit Page, Fill Width, Fit Height and Full Fit.
• Crop Margins: on or off.
• Tap Zone Size: Narrow, Standard or Wide.
• Smart Zoom: in paged mode, taps step through the four quarters of the page before turning it, which helps on a small screen.
